The Edge

garden surround.jpg

I'm not a big fan of borders, but these edging strips could prove to be the exception. They're moulded in cast iron and are made to rust and age with time. Practically they have a 9cm spike and cost £7.50 per section from Plantstuff. Now it's a question of are hearts just a tad too romantic and girly?

Vibrant Gardens

loom chair jlewiss.jpg

You're not going to miss this two tone garden loom stool from John Lewis. It costs £30 and comes with a matching mushroom shaped table for £50. You could complete your acid yellow and green garden set with an equally vibrant hammock. Perfect for this Spring sunshine.

Wind Lights

IndigoWindlights_lg.jpg

These Indigo wind lights would add a romantic and soft touch to sitting outdoors in the evening. They are in fact North African bottles with hammered metal lids and are available from Plumo for £49 for a set of 3. If you are into very individual and highly decorative jewellery then this is the site for you. Then tucked away in the middle you'll find some great picnic baskets and a French enamel thermometer with a birds nest keyholder. Quite an eclectic romp with some great chintzy bits and bobs.

Labour and Wait

twine.jpg

Labour and Wait is a surprising success story. A shop specialising in ordinary old fashioned products that exists as a thriving East End shop and a bustling online presence. This £18 oak twine stand is typical of their well selected products, practical and durable and guaranteed to outlive me. They have an enviable collection of enamel pots and pans along with dustpan and brush sets which are timeless classics. Never have everyday objects looked so good.

Recycled Tools

tools.jpg

I have a soft spot for the Re-found Objects site. It's simple and honest with an eclectic range of recycled and reused products for the home. These garden tools are a great product to recycle as they are robust and practical with a distinct whiff of vintage. Most of the tools start from £24, while the hand tools start from £12. While you're there take a peek at their planters and vintage watering cans.

Posh Playhouses

b 7 q playhouse.jpg

As a child I spent hours in our playhouse in the garden, it was constructed from a random selection of abandoned doors and panels dad found on a building site. So it's nothing like this super deluxe Tower Playhouse with it's swanky verandah. It's available from B & Q for £286.46, a saving of £52,54 with it's current 15% saving on selected items. This could keep your kids very busy entertaining the neighbourhood this Summer.

Shady Sails

shade sail forsyht4.jpg

The idea of these vibrant garden sails really appeals to me . They'll keep me from going a mottled red colour and be aesthetically pleasing to live with. These Coolaroo shade sails would dramatically change the look and feel of our garden. Even better, the whole range is currently reduced, so prices start from £39.95. I do love a bargain. You can get every size and colour at the fairly posh Forsyth4 site. Now just a few months to wait for the sunshine to appear.

Lawns in crisis

autuman lawns.jpg

If your lawn is looking as sad as mine, then it needs a stiff Gardening Expres s tonic in the form of Earthwork's organic fertiliser. It contains a cocktail of nutrients and a humus soil conditioner (whatever that is?) So spend £12.95 and you'll get 2.5 litres of on-going replenishment of the soil in the root zone. All sounds good to me.

Lady Leek

little hen.jpg

Or the 'Nodding onion' -yes- that's the name of this little allium Summer beauty. I'd like to buy lots of plants from the red hens nursery. They have a really earthy and local site, there's nothing frilly or fancy about it, just clusters of bulbs (7/8) for around £2.50 plus postage. Where else could you buy environmentally friendly plants that have never seen a pesticide, fungicide or herbicide in their seedling life. Not sure they'll survive in our garden without drugs and chemicals - but worth a try.

Trees2mydoor

mothersday06_cup.jpg

What an inspired, postable and ecological idea for Mothers Day on March 18th. Log onto trees2mydoor and select which tree you think your dear mom would like to receive from £24.50. They'll pop it in a reusable joute bag with a care guide and card. This will be posted in a biodegradable cardboard tube along with messages of love, spring and wisdom. Whatever the occassion they have a tree to inspire and create a lasting memory. I can think of quite a few few people who'd like to receive a crab tree, it's long been associated with finding future lovers.

Hand- Woven Bamboo

basket fair.jpg

This hand woven gardeners basket comes in 2 sizes for £15 from Traidcraft . They've been helping poor people win their share of word trade since 1979 - thankfully it's currently very chic. As you pop a trowel and seeds into your shiny new basket, you'll know it was made from an organisation working with mainly rural women in Bangladesh which offers adult literacy classes and day-care for children. You'll also be supporting Fair Trade fortnight which ends on March 11th. Beats a trip to B & Q or John Lewis.

Super Tramp

urchin supetramp.jpg

Despite having bizarrely chosen the same name as the 1970's band super tramp for this climbing frame. Thankfully that is where the resemblance ends. You have to hand it to those Urchin people they may not stock the cheapest products, but they're always one step ahead on kids trends and parents desires. So banish your teepee thoughts and get this wild £689 action station.

Shiny Sea Pebbles

stones.jpg

I've got a yearning for the sea at the moment, so these rainbow cobbles for 11.98 at B & Q caught my eye. They don't say where they're from or how much I 'll get for my pennies, so maybe I'll take a trip to the seaside instead.
