Rads are hip

old radiator.jpg

Radiators have come a long way in the last few years, now there is so much scope and choice that it's another research area. So first stop has to be The Old Radiator Compnay where you can get beautiful old cast iron radiators or get your own restored in a variety of colours and finishes. The prices vary according to size, type and look, for some of us these remind us too much of our school days.

To be Frank

hand made tile.jpg

Ok so the image isn't great, but all the more reason to log onto Frank Works and buy into a bit of one-off creativity. I'm slightly biased because I got a 'You Light up the World' tile for £23.50 for Christmas. This is a great online showcase for British designers and craft makers as well as an inviting shop in Whitstable. With Valentines day as the next big event, check out their perspex heart keys, or even better book a trip to Kent where you can guzzle some fresh oysters and then feast your eyes on some inspiring works of art.

Stag Parties

stah head.jpg

I do like these dramatic and witty Belgium stag heads. They have a real presence as they measure nearly a metre in size and come in a triplex plywood which is beech or black. They start at £165 and can be found at the lovely York based Snow Home website, who have a good eye for spotting unusual home products.

Bloomin' Lovely

Heat wallpaper.jpgPlease excuse the cheesy post title but I can't tell you how excited I was when I stumbled upon this heat sensitive wallpaper by Shiyuan. A sure case of design imitating life, the stalks literally 'bloom' when your radiator heats up, disappearing again when it's switched off. It's unclear whether or not it's for sale as yet but we'll definately keep you posted. Be sure to check out their website for a full demonstration.

Wall Candy

Wallcandy-composite-3a.jpg

You are art is the best website I've seen for personalising your own art. It's site is clearly laid out and the process is explained and priced well. Plus you can always drop into their shop should you still need some clarification or inspiration. How rewarding to tell your admiring guests that you created the art on your wall.

Wow wallpaper

linda barket wall paper.jpg

Can't say I'm a big fan of Linda Barker, but that could be due to an excess of DFS adverts. But I do like her range of floral wallpapers starting with this chrysanthemum inspired £20 per roll creation. But I like the sites she's with even more. Graham Brown has a well selected range of established and new designers, great prices, style and just take a look at their set of Wow wallpapers......and go 'Wow'.

Flock to this

flock romo.jpg

The closest many of us will have got to flock wallpaper is sat in an Indian restaurant. So what a pleasant surprise this Lasari flock is from Romo Fabrics . Elegant in black and calming in blue, lots of fashionable mustard yellows from £36.95 a roll. Go on be daring and paper that wall you've been staring at.

Lofty Art

loftart.jpg

Buying art can be a tricky one if you're unsure what you want or like. If you fancy something big and bold then Loftart is not a bad place to start. You can peruse their online galleries or be inspired to get your own image printed on a canvas or perspex for as little as £35. Failing that head to to the Affordable Art Fair which starts on March 15th and runs until March 19th in Battersea Park, London.

Affordable Art

art fair.bmp

The Affordable Art Fair is a good day out with or without a purchase. You can gaze at the creative work of over 125 galleries and then work out if you have £50 or £3,00 to spend. Finish it off with a champagne lunch or a picnic in the park with some leftovers for the ducks. Even better book now with Living Etc on this link and you can get two tickets for the price of one. A bargain always makes me feel warm inside.

Sticking issue

Interactivewallpaper.jpg By far the most elegant of wall stickers (usually called 'decals' – a weird American thing) are from Rachel Kelly, originator of Interactive Wallpaper. The actual wallpaper printed with flower stems costs £249 a roll, but the lovely flowers to stick onto it are just £22 a pack. Why not paint your own stems? Or just position them in lovely bunches.

Osborne and (anything but) Little

BedlamO&L.jpg I've always associated Osborne & Little with twee 80s stripes, but now I'm wowed by their reissued 1968 psychedelic wallpapers. I'm going to have this Bedlam paper from their Vintage collection, reasonably priced at £45 an extra-wide roll, on my sitting-room chimney breast.

Stunning floral walls

wallpaper.jpg

House Couturier has a beautiful and stylish range of floral and bespoke wallpapers, which can also be printed onto matching cottons or linens. They don't give their prices, which I presume means that they're too scary to contemplate. Their floral collection is not only elegant but also designed to appear as if the flowers are cascading down or growing up the walls. They also cater for a lot of your window issues in terms of blinds, shutters and dressings etc. but it is their wallpapers which are quite simply breathtaking.

Hang up your coat... and find the bills!

portemanteau2.jpg

I love things that have a dual usage and this is a great example. It's a combination of a coat hanger and a place to put bills, magazines etc. The Portemanteau is simple in form and material, a raw wooden plank, of which one part is left blank It can be found on the lamaisondermarina site which contains no prices but lots of inspiration for your interior.

Mirror mirror on the wall...

mirror-1.jpg

Add a touch of fairy tale glamour to your interior with one of Beyond The Valley's Perspex mirrors.

This Chandelier design comes in A1 size for £145 or A2 size for £95. Their Unicorn design is also very beautiful.

Bye Bye lost Keys

hers_small.gif

His and her stuff can be cheesy, but this is cute, adorable and functional. I lose my keys a lot, so will definitely spend £12.50 on a key holder for me and my other half (when I get one)! J-me have a great range of quirky household essentials. This keyholder would definately guarantee a grin on your face everytime you put your keys away.

Capt'n Hook

littlemirror.jpgIf you're after something a bit different and quirky then be sure to check out the range at Thorsten Van Elten. I love the kooky spin they put on what are otherwise everyday objects. This portable mirror by Roomsafari is a good example of this. Its practical as well as fun and there's also a matching blackboard. (£17.50)

Hung up

girotondo-alessi.com.jpg

This Alessi design is so effortlessly pleasing. Girotondo is a five-hook rack crafted from polished steel and is priced at £23. The fact that the year of production for these was 1997 just shows how simplicity can pay in design. It's sleek and stylish, well made and well designed, without taking itself too seriously.

I like to think of an Alessi piece here or there as a little affirmation; a reminder to have fun, enjoy myself and look good, like all the best Alessi does.

Stick It

blik.jpg
If, like me, you're forever changing your mind you'll love whatisblik. They sell removable, self-adhesive wall decorations (or 'surface graphics' ) that give the impression of stencilling minus the mess of actually painting. This one is my favourite but there's a vast selection of designs (including Christmas and kids) and when you decide you're bored or need a change they come safely off the wall. Available in the UK at Supernice. (From £24)

Perfect paper

3Dpapergarlands.re-foundobjects.com.jpg

Paper garlands are so much fun to make, but they rarely come out as beautiful as these ones from RE, it's as if they were snipped by Edward Scissorhands himself. You can choose from a dove, a heart and a skeleton motif, they're 3.66m long and £6 each.

If it was up to me, the whole world would be covered in fairy lights and decorations all year round anyway, but I think these beautiful creations are delicate and understated enough to decorate any season.

Creep

creep_rosecd.jpgI can't get enough of Rockett St George at the moment. The UK based site which specialises in showcasing UK bred designers features a vast range of fun and quirky homeware. I'm particularly taken by this Black Creep Shelf by Susan Bradley (£95) This gorgeous shelf was inspired by 'the way plants grow' and gives the illusion of rose boughs climbing upwards. As well as being an ingenious idea design-wise, its also a cool and pretty piece that'll add interest to the barest and most boring of walls. A wider range including tables is also available at www.susanbradley.co.uk - definately worth checking out.

Plan and make up

TubeMapMirror1.jpg

My friends bought me this for my birthday and I think it's fantastic. You wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and plan your route for the day! I use the tube a lot so this £60 tube map mirror is very practical. Suck Uk has a great range of inspirational and unusual gift ideas.

Antlers and Hooks

Antlerscoathanger design my world.jpg

I can't stop stumbling across these witty antlers designed by Alexander Taylor. They are made from a vibrant red powder coated steel wire and at £49 are a lot easier to obtain than the orginal stag's head it's modelled on.

shedhook_small1.jpg

This shed hook also seems to have invaded my space and can be yours for £15 from the highly desirable Design My World site. I last saw it at the 100% Design Show where it was courting a lot of attention and awards. Looks small but holds big.

While you're at it, buy this elegant Dutch beaded coat hanger for £3.50. Perfect to display that special dress - if I had one.

Future Maps

map hidden art.jpg

Are you looking for something different for your teenagers wall, then why not buy this Future Map . It utilises an equal area projection, which is effectively a different vision of our planet, which represents countries in their correct proportional sizes. The map is printed on to a quality silk finish paper with metallic silver seas and a gloss varnish finish to the land mass. It measures 90 cm by 45.6 and costs £32.95 by those creative people at Hidden Art . So while your teenager sulks, is wired to their ipod or daydreaming in their room, they can also gaze and learn a little about the world around them.

Raised Reliefs

wall panel.jpg

Those Finnish people must have design as part of their genetic make up - lets hope some of it mutates this way. Meanwhile enjoy Anne Kyyro quinn's work in the UK. Her signature style is raised relief detailing, like the wall panel section shown here. This not only gives a sculptural three-dimensional effect to her work, but also gives it a tactile quality. Her range includes bags cushions, throws etc, you can only find out their price by emailing her directly. One thing you can be certain of - her work is definately not flat.

See weed

acc_algue_lrg.jpg Is it a work of art? A room divider? A curtain? It can be anything you want. Designed by the Bouroullec brothers and produced by Panton-chair manufacturer Vitra this DIY structure is made out of clip-together plastic seaweedy units. The cheapest online source I can find is Pure Design Classics who do 6 pieces for £15 or 50 for £60 in white, black, green or red. You need 25 per square metre.

Iron lady

htc applicatins 3.jpg Kelly Atkins's eureka moment came while foolishly ironing on the synthetic carpet in her student accommodation, turning a patch of carpet hard and flat. Now her company Carpet-Burns produces HTC (heat-treated carpet) panels out of faulty and end-of-line stocks of naff carpeting. The stuff would take 250,000 years to bio degrade if sent to landfill. The result is a smooth material with where-have-I-seen-that-before smudged patterns. It can be used in much the same way as MDF for things like flooring and wall-paneling. It can also be moulded. More happy accidents please.

Blue Cuckoos

wall clock conran.jpg

Pascal Tarabay has transformed the traditional cuckoo clock into a witty and entertaining time-telling piece. It can be yours for £120 from the Conran Shop and will even promise to be quiet at night due to a light sensor.
