Let them eat Cake

DSCF7594adj.jpg

It's been a while since I updated our Indoor section because I've been busy setting up 'Let them eat Cake' with my very good friend Clare. We now have a large collection of vintage mismatched cake stands, which are perfect for displaying fruit, cheese, bread rolls, jewellery and of course cake. They range in price from £30 for a pedestal to an average £65 for a three tier and are diverse in style, colour and eccentricity! Great if you could take a peek and give us some feedback, as we've only been up and running for a few months and are still learning lots about what you want. We know they're very special, so you feel they are a perfect wedding gift and as a lot of you already have a lot of china, we're offering a bespoke service too. We may be in the midst of a recession, so let you and us eat cake while we ride it out.

Hot Phones

Scandiphones_lg.jpg

My new idect phones are useless because the mouthpiece is so critical, that people often can not hear me - which really defeats the phones objective. This 1960's Scandiphone from Plumo would be an ideal replacement. It's a distinctive white or orange, has the dial hidden in it's base and costs £49. It's the 10th anniversary of this eclectic company, who specialise in lots of girly clothing and accessories with random lovely house fiddly bits thrown in. There's lots of inspirational and indulgent stuff for Mothers Day too.

Midcentury Modern show

midcenturymodern.jpg

The smashing Midcentury Modern show by the team at ourshowhome returns to Dulwich College, London SE21 on the 4th March 2007, from 10am to 4pm. Its the number one show for sourcing original fifties, sixties and seventies collectable furniture, lights and other gorgeous objects from a number of top dealers. They also have a number of modern young designers like People Will Always Need Plates and Donna Wilson to complement the retro feel.

A word of warning though - the last show housebible went to was absolutely packed so we'll be turning up early to bag the bargains and avoid the crush! More details are here

If you can't make the Dulwich show, then put the date of 1st July 2007 in your diary and head to the seaside as the Midcentury Modern show takes over the De La Warr Pavillion in Bexhill on Sea. Mmm...classic design and scrummy ice cream - an irresistable combination. More details here.

Video killed the radio star

r250_pastel_pink.jpg

Wow, can I have this milkshake pink Roberts Revival Radio in my kitchen now please. This is the R250 leatherette model, one of 14 different colours, which is 235w x 153h x 98d mm and costs £100. Yippie, it makes me want to wear bunches, blow bubbles and roll around on skates, for no reason at all (other than it's fun).

If curvy 1930's sofas are your thing, then head to Broadway Market. Just go there anyhow, because they've got a great Farmers Market and the new outdoor heated lido has just opened. This Jean Renoir 3 seater was £1'195 and is now £795, the two seater was £995, now £595. So grab your olives and bread and head to Vintage Sofas.

Designs for Life

arne chair 2.jpg

I love it when you come across little shops specialising in 20th century design, expert upholstery and restoration too. Solomon's have a great little shop in Crouch End, London and an online service too. A bit disappointing that a lot of the unique pieces on the site are sold. However, give them a call if you can't find what you're after, as pieces like this Arne Jacobsen chair are representative of the high quality pieces they sell. They've been around since 1982 so there's not much these guys don't know about classic and affordable pieces.

Old Fashioned Ringing

Bakelite phone.jpg

We currently have 5 telephones and still I can never find one. Several of them have also developed a low level hiss which cuts out half the conversation. So rather than constantly phone hunt, we could get ourselves a fixed phone, which will not end up in the laundry bin or down the chair. Telephone Lines specialise in period, collectable and very funny phones. This 1930s Bakerlite phone costs £149 and can also be sourced in a variety of other colours. Maybe it's time for the static phone to take its rightful place in the home.
