Stripey Runners

runners roger oates.jpg

Having lived with plain wooden stairs for five years, I really want to liven things up with a runner. This turkey red Chatham number fits the bill perfectly from Roger Oates. Prices start from £620 to cover a straight run of 13 steps. If this sounds too scary take a peek in their clearance basket at rugs, runners or fabrics - as there's not a bad selection.

Go Danish

sliding door.jpg

If you've outgrown Ikea then it's time to head for some well crafed Danish design at Ilva. Not everything has a wow factor but it does exceptionally well in the sofa and wardrobe department. These Concept melamine sliding wardrobes can be combined in a variety of front finishes and start from £350. Or you could go for glass, pure white melamine or maple for slightly more. Definately worth a trip to their stores in Manchester, Thurrock or Gateshead, as a great day out with some choice Danish food thrown in.

Customised Beds

aspen-bed_jpg.jpg

Feather & Black also incorporates the Iron Bed Company, so you can expect a great selection of beds and some sumptious linen. This Aspen bed is different in that you can chose the fabric it is upholstered in and it's currently reduced from £975 to £925 for a double. Lots of March bargains to be had as well as some beautifully designed childrens furniture and duvets -might motivate me to have a much needed Spring clean.

Panton Inspired

dwell chair.jpg

If you can't afford the real Panton, then how about this cheeky curvy replica for £45 from Dwell . You can see the real thing at their shops in Balham, Islington or Fort Dunlop in Birmingham, they also have a fairly substantial online shop. Their magazine is very tantalising but as I found out a lot of the goods are quite disappointing in the flesh. This chair also comes in black and the child's version is £19.95, as they say you get what you pay for.

Alvar's heritage

Bambu-1.jpg Founded by iconic designer Alvar Aalto and friends in 1935, the Finnish furniture company Artek continues to produce marvellously modern furniture. In a groundbreaking attempt to banish cane furniture's grandmotherly image, this fantastically simple Bambu chair (and accompanying tables) by Henrik Tjaerby exploits bamboo’s tensile strength, bending it in characteristic Aalto style to produce elegant furniture with a utilitarian feel. £250 from twentytwentyone.

Lofty Art

loftart.jpg

Buying art can be a tricky one if you're unsure what you want or like. If you fancy something big and bold then Loftart is not a bad place to start. You can peruse their online galleries or be inspired to get your own image printed on a canvas or perspex for as little as £35. Failing that head to to the Affordable Art Fair which starts on March 15th and runs until March 19th in Battersea Park, London.

Design my chair

design my world.jpg

I can't escape this I B Pop chair from Blue Marmalade. It's clever and unique, a single sheet of plastic has been turned into a stunning contemporary chair. You can find it at Design My World which just oozes good design and desire. This chair is happy to sit inside or out, but for £135 I guess I'll be keeping it in and away from the kids and their markers.

Plastic weaving

laundry set.jpg

Traidcraft have got a lot of ethical but quite ugly products on their site. But you can also trip across beautifully crafted and well priced baskets. This £45 set consists of a large lidded laundry basket with a cotton fabric lining and drawstring, one large handled open basket and two smaller ones. They're made in Thailand by ThaiCraft, a non-profit organisation which works with artisan groups to help them gain self-reliance and preserve Thailand's indigenous crafts. Now there's a thought to dwell on when you pull out your dirty laundry.

I've just realised that our mattress is over ten years old, so it's time to head to the mattress man. Prepare to be dazzled with over 2,000 to chose from - I feel a mattress speciality degree coming on. They've got a great range of brand names and will deliver the next day - handy if yours happens to go up in flames.
