East End Designers

coatstand.jpg

Unto This Last is the closest I'll get to being involved in the production of a piece of furniture. The secret lies in their Brick lane shop where they manufacture everything on site. From behind a glass wall you can watch computer-controlled machines make your possession based on a simple wooden locking mechanism that doesn't use tools. This allows them to offer most of their products in a wide range of sizes and finishes. Great philosophy, check out the website and then treat yourself to this elegant coat stand for £55 or £62 in oak. Simplicity and beauty - how refreshing.

Affordable Art

art fair.bmp

The Affordable Art Fair is a good day out with or without a purchase. You can gaze at the creative work of over 125 galleries and then work out if you have £50 or £3,00 to spend. Finish it off with a champagne lunch or a picnic in the park with some leftovers for the ducks. Even better book now with Living Etc on this link and you can get two tickets for the price of one. A bargain always makes me feel warm inside.

Blinding designs

blinds desing your own.bmp

If you can't find a window blind to suit your taste at Web-Blinds then get creative and design your own, like this childrens one. I'm really taken with this site. It has a great range of styles and fabrics, an idiot -proof guide to measuring your windows and a large bargain section, with upto 40% off. Blinding.

Bags of Pleasure

recycled rice bag.jpg

This recycled Cambodian Rice Shopping Bag would happily sit indoors storing things or outside shopping. It's a practical ,eye catching product and the work of an organisation which helps provide shelter, education and housing to vulnerable women.

Rather bizarrely it can be found on the Firebox site. If you're new to this, then click on to find hundreds of gadgets and gizmos, most of which defy a definition or use. Not sure how this product ended up here -but I like it.

Midcentury Modern show

midcenturymodern.jpg

The smashing Midcentury Modern show by the team at ourshowhome returns to Dulwich College, London SE21 on the 4th March 2007, from 10am to 4pm. Its the number one show for sourcing original fifties, sixties and seventies collectable furniture, lights and other gorgeous objects from a number of top dealers. They also have a number of modern young designers like People Will Always Need Plates and Donna Wilson to complement the retro feel.

A word of warning though - the last show housebible went to was absolutely packed so we'll be turning up early to bag the bargains and avoid the crush! More details are here

If you can't make the Dulwich show, then put the date of 1st July 2007 in your diary and head to the seaside as the Midcentury Modern show takes over the De La Warr Pavillion in Bexhill on Sea. Mmm...classic design and scrummy ice cream - an irresistable combination. More details here.

20% off Kas Bedlinen

Kas.jpg

Kas is an Australian design brand, whose rich and luxurious bed linen and duvets are now available at Wallace Sacks, and to celebrate this they are offering 20% off the range. You can see the full range of bedlinen here, but we particularly liked this Sienna range of flowing leaves in embroidery and applique on cotton.

And whilst you're at it, Wallace Sacks are offering housebible readers 50% off their Egyptian Cotton Sheets if you enter the promo code ECB into the checkout basket. So no excuses now not to snuggle up in that "hotel feeling" bed.

Happy sofas

nabri sofa.jpg

I've just spent 4 days in deep sofa talk with my sister. We mused on when would her boys learn that it is a seat and not a trampoline? When could they opt for fabric or should they stick with wipe-clean leather - the cost, the style... it went on and on. So for all of you out there with young children or a refined budget then head to Nabru Furniture.

This Orb 2 Seater Sofa was £399 and is now £299, plus you have heaps of choice in terms of fabrics, leg and back design. Even better, they will assemble a selection of the sofas and offer a non-quibble 14 day return policy on some too. Now that's what I call happy sofa shopping.

Pure & White

playroom furniture.jpg

I spend way too much time pondering on how to make the kids stuff more organised. So this £325 playroom unit from The White Company could be the answer. It comes in 3 widths, so has flexibility in the shelving arrangement. It also has an anti -tipping device and a metal bracket to help align it. If this takes your fancy then complete the look with their kids matching table and chairs. Now all you've got to do is check that paint/chalk/goo can be easily removed from it and make the kids swear that they'll spend time admiring and enjoying their top - notch shelving.

Lamps with Baubles

bauble lamp.jpg

I've been looking at these bauble lamps for a while now and most of them have been in the region of £70 plus. So it's a nice surprise to see this contemporary faux suede lamp for a very reasonable £39 at Marks and Spencers .

If glass balls aren't your thing ,then they also have some elegant ceramic table lamps for £39.50. Once again M & S gets the style and price right.

Sticking issue

Interactivewallpaper.jpg By far the most elegant of wall stickers (usually called 'decals' – a weird American thing) are from Rachel Kelly, originator of Interactive Wallpaper. The actual wallpaper printed with flower stems costs £249 a roll, but the lovely flowers to stick onto it are just £22 a pack. Why not paint your own stems? Or just position them in lovely bunches.

Osborne and (anything but) Little

BedlamO&L.jpg I've always associated Osborne & Little with twee 80s stripes, but now I'm wowed by their reissued 1968 psychedelic wallpapers. I'm going to have this Bedlam paper from their Vintage collection, reasonably priced at £45 an extra-wide roll, on my sitting-room chimney breast.

Smart storage

MakeShift_susp1_01-07.jpg Made out of a lightweight eco-friendly plastic material used for packaging, movisi products are ingenious, stylish, simple-to-assemble and affordable. MakeShift shelves will fit into any alcove and support themselves (48 Euros + VAT for two) or can be freestanding with the clips provided.

play.jpg
Or there are the sixties-look Play shelves that can stand freely in any formation you can imagine. Kits start at 94.80 Euros (four squares). Where have these been all my life? They do a modular sofa too.

Stunning floral walls

wallpaper.jpg

House Couturier has a beautiful and stylish range of floral and bespoke wallpapers, which can also be printed onto matching cottons or linens. They don't give their prices, which I presume means that they're too scary to contemplate. Their floral collection is not only elegant but also designed to appear as if the flowers are cascading down or growing up the walls. They also cater for a lot of your window issues in terms of blinds, shutters and dressings etc. but it is their wallpapers which are quite simply breathtaking.
